How To Test MDMA For Purity & Safety (2026 Guide)
⚠️ Not Sure If You Have MDMA, MDA, or Something Dangerous?
Our MDMA Spot Kit Package (Marquis + Mecke + Simon’s) identifies real MDMA, distinguishes it from MDA, and detects dangerous adulterants like meth, bath salts, and fentanyl.
MDMA vs Molly vs Ecstasy: What’s the Difference?
If you’re searching for how to test your substance, you’ve probably heard these terms used interchangeably. Here’s what they actually mean:
| Term | What It Means | Common Form |
|---|---|---|
| MDMA | The chemical name: 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine | Powder, crystal, or pressed pills |
| Molly | Street name for MDMA in powder or crystal form | Capsules, powder, crystal |
| Ecstasy | Street name for MDMA in pressed pill form | Pressed tablets (often stamped with logos) |
| MDA (“Sass”) | Similar compound, slightly different effects | Powder, crystal, or pills (often sold as MDMA) |
The Critical Problem: These terms are used interchangeably on the street, but your “molly” might contain:
- MDA instead of MDMA (different, more psychedelic experience)
- Methamphetamine (vastly different, more dangerous effects)
- Bath salts like methylone or MDPV (unpredictable, potentially deadly)
- Research chemicals like 2C-B or other substituted phenethylamines
- Fentanyl (the leading cause of overdose deaths)
- A mixture of multiple substances
Why Testing MDMA Is Critical
Unlike cocaine or other drugs, MDMA is frequently misrepresented. Here’s why testing is essential:
Fentanyl Contamination Is Real
Fentanyl test strips have detected fentanyl in substances sold as molly. Even trace amounts can be fatal. Our fentanyl test strips do NOT produce false positives with MDMA, methamphetamine, or cocaine containing levamisole—making them the most reliable strips on the market for harm reduction.
⚠️ Always test with fentanyl strips FIRST, before using any other test kit. Fentanyl can be lethal in doses as small as 2 milligrams.
Common Dangerous Adulterants
Our testing kits can detect these substances commonly sold as MDMA or found mixed with MDMA:
| Substance | Category | Detection Method |
|---|---|---|
| Methylone, MDPV, pentylone, butylone | Bath salts (cathinones) | Marquis + Mecke |
| Methamphetamine | Stimulant | Marquis + Mecke |
| PMA, PMMA, PMEA | Paramethoxyamphetamines (very dangerous) | Mecke |
| 2C-B, 2C-E, 2C-I, 2C-T-7 | Psychedelic phenethylamines | Marquis + Mecke |
| MDA | Similar but different effects | Simon’s (distinguishes from MDMA) |
| DXM (dextromethorphan) | Dissociative (found in cough syrup) | Marquis |
Important: This is not an exhaustive list. These are just the most commonly detected adulterants. Our Marquis and Mecke reagents can detect dozens of substances.
Step-by-Step Guide to Testing MDMA
Testing MDMA requires multiple reagents for accurate identification. Here’s our recommended approach based on your budget and needs:
LEVEL 1 – BASIC EVALUATION
Testing with just one or two spot kits for basic adulterant detection
If you can only purchase one spot kit, we recommend the Marquis Spot Test Kit. This kit is capable of positively identifying MDMA, as well as detecting a wide range of adulterants, such as methylone, MDPV, pentylone, butylone, 2C-E, 2-FMA, ethylone, 2C-B, DXM, methamphetamine, MDAI, IAP, 6-APDB, 6-APB, 6-EAPB, 6-APB succinate, 6-APDB, 5-MAPB, 5-EAPB, 5-APB succinate, 5-APB, MDA, 4-FMA, ETHCATHINONE, 5-APDB, 2-FA, and 2C-I.
On its own, this kit cannot detect the difference between MDMA (“molly”) and MDA (“sass”). However, using it in combination with our Simon’s Spot Test Kit will provide that distinction. The Simon’s Spot Test Kit is available for purchase individually, or with the recommended MDMA package below.
LEVEL 2 – COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION (RECOMMENDED)
Testing with our recommended, substance-specific packages for a thorough evaluation
For comprehensive, accurate drug identification, as well as detection of cutting agents, we recommend our MDMA Spot Kit Package. In comparison to using just one spot kit, this package provides much more certainty when verifying a substance’s contents. It includes the Marquis, Mecke, and Simon’s spot kits. Additionally, purchasing the package is more affordable than purchasing each spot kit individually.
What Each Reagent Does:
Marquis is the base staple for positively identifying MDMA, and detecting a wide range of cutting agents, such as methylone, MDPV, pentylone, butylone, 2C-E, 2-FMA, ethylone, 2C-B, DXM, methamphetamine, MDAI, IAP, 6-APDB, 6-APB, 6-EAPB, 6-APB succinate, 5-MAPB, 5-EAPB, 5-APB succinate, 5-APB, MDA, 4-FMA, ETHCATHINONE, 5-APDB, 2-FA, and 2C-I.
Mecke also positively identifies MDMA, and checks for many other substances, including cathinones (bath salts), PMA, PMMA, PMEA, 4-MEC, Adderall, 2-FA, 2-FMA, 4-EMC, methamphetamine, a-PVP, methedrone, ethcathinone, ethylone, MDPV, butylone, a-PHP, pentylone, 2C-B, methylone, 4-FMA, 5-APB succinate, 6-APB succinate, 6-EAPB, 5-APDB, 6-APDB, 2C-I, 6-APB, 2C-T-7, 6-APDV, 5-APB, MDAI, MDA, 5-MAPB, 5-EAPB, IAP, 2C-E, and PV8, among others.
Simon’s distinguishes between MDMA (“molly”) and MDA (“sass”) with a deep blue reaction. This is a two-part kit: add Simon’s A to your sample first, then add Simon’s B to observe and match the reaction.
Confirming results with a second and third test kit is highly recommended, because it provides more accuracy when verifying a substance’s contents, and can even reveal the presence of otherwise hidden adulterants.

LEVEL 3 – HIGHEST CERTAINTY EVALUATION
Testing with our Skylab Separation Kit package for the most reliable results available without sending your sample to a laboratory
Our Skylab Separation Kits have the ability to separate mixed substances—allowing you to identify each different component of the mixture individually. A significant advantage of these kits is that they provide an approximate sense of how much of each substance is present—a feature otherwise only possible using full laboratory analysis.
For testing MDMA with our separation kits, we recommend the Gemini Separation Package, which includes the Marquis and Mecke reagents. You would need to separately purchase the Simon’s Spot Test Kit to ensure the distinction between MDMA (“molly”) and MDA (“sass”).
Alternatively, you could purchase the Curiosity (Pro Level) Separation Package, which includes all of the necessary spot kits, along with every other reagent available on our site—perfect for versatile testing in the future.
For more information detailing the differences in our test kits, as well as instructions for how to use them, please visit the “Our Types of Test Kits” page. For comprehensive instructions on how to use our Skylab Separation Test Kits, please refer to the “Skylab Separation Test Kit Basics” page.
Interested in Testing for Purity?
Testing with our QTest Purity Test Kits for the concentration of active ingredient in a substance
QTests (or “quantitative tests”) are novel, highly advanced test kits for testing the purity or potency—the concentration of active ingredient—of a substance.
For testing MDMA for purity, we recommend the MDMA QTest Kit. This single-use test kit detects MDMA and its concentration in pill (pressed tablets of any color), powder, and crystalline form. With these test kits, you can determine the number of milligrams of MDMA in an ecstasy tablet, and the percent purity of your crystal or powder MDMA.
⚠️ WARNING: Understanding “Purity”
In the context of these test kits, “purity” refers to the concentration of an active ingredient in a substance. Purity does NOT mean your substance is “clean,” or free from dangerous cutting agents or impurities.
For example: Your QTest results show 28 mg of MDMA per 32 mg of powder tested. This means your MDMA is about 88% pure. Sounds good, right?
The problem: This does NOT indicate what that remaining percentage contains. Your substance could be 88% MDMA, 10% methamphetamine, and 2% fentanyl. The methamphetamine could seriously alter your experience, and the fentanyl could be fatal.
Always test your substance using Spot Kits and Fent Strips first, to identify your MDMA and rule out fentanyl, along with other cutting agents. QTests are extremely useful in determining concentration, but they do not identify your substance, or rule out cutting agents.
Note: This kit will react similarly with MDA, 6-APB and 5-MAPB, but it is not accurate with these substances. This kit does not work on liquids.
For comprehensive instructions on how to use our MDMA QTest Kits, please refer to the QTest Basics page.
How to Use MDMA Test Kits: Visual Guide
Follow this flowchart to properly test your substance and interpret the results:

Understanding the Flowchart Results:
“COLOR MATCHES SPECTRUM”
This means that your reaction matched the spectrum, and you can move down and left to use the next Spot Test Kit.
“ZERO REACTION”
This means that there was no notable color change. If this is on your flow chart, the substance you were trying to identify was not supposed to react, but other adulterants (cutting agents) would have shown up instead if they were present. No reaction means that those adulterants were not present, and you can move down and left to the next Spot Test Kit.
“ANY OTHER COLOR”
This means that your reaction was, in some way, different than the expected reaction on the spectrum. At this point, you know that you either have a completely different substance from what you were expecting, or an adulterated one. Returning or discarding the sample is the best course of action, although it is possible to use additional tests to tentatively identify the substance.
Common Questions About Testing MDMA
Can I test pressed pills (ecstasy tablets)?
Yes! All our test kits work on pressed pills. Simply scrape a few crumbs off the tablet into your test tube. You only need a very small amount—about 1/10 of a blotter, a very small amount of powder, or a few crumbs scraped off of a pill.
How do I know if I have MDMA or MDA?
You need the Simon’s reagent to distinguish between MDMA (“molly”) and MDA (“sass”). Simon’s produces a deep blue reaction with MDMA. Without Simon’s, Marquis and Mecke will show positive reactions for both MDMA and MDA, making them indistinguishable.
What if my test shows an unexpected color?
If your reagent shows a color that doesn’t match the expected MDMA reaction spectrum, your substance is either a completely different drug or is heavily adulterated. The safest course of action is to discard the sample. You can use additional reagents to try to identify what substance you actually have, but consumption is not recommended.
Do I really need to test for fentanyl every time?
Yes. Fentanyl contamination in the drug supply is widespread and often fatal. Our fentanyl test strips do NOT produce false positives with MDMA, methamphetamine, or cocaine containing levamisole. Always test with fentanyl strips before using reagent tests or consuming any substance.
How long do test kits last?
Each spot kit can be used 50-100 times. Plastic bottles are easier to dispense from, while glass bottles last longer (200 uses). Store your kits in a cool, dark place to maximize shelf life—typically 12-18 months when stored properly.
Can testing guarantee my MDMA is safe?
No test can guarantee complete safety. Our tests identify substances and detect common adulterants, but they cannot detect every possible contaminant or assess dosage safety. Testing dramatically reduces risk but does not eliminate it entirely. Always start with a small dose and never use alone.
Test Before You Roll
Don’t risk taking bath salts, meth, or fentanyl. Our MDMA Spot Kit Package identifies real MDMA, distinguishes it from MDA, and detects dangerous adulterants in minutes.
