How to Test Methamphetamine, and Tell It Apart from Amphetamine (2026 guide)

Two questions matter first: is there fentanyl in it, and is it methamphetamine or amphetamine? One reagent can't answer both.
Methamphetamine is a stimulant in the amphetamine family, sold as clear or off-white crystal and as powder. Both forms are routinely cut, mixed, or substituted, and appearance won't tell you which, since MSM (dimethyl sulfone), a common cut, forms clear crystal that looks like the real thing. What gets passed off as meth ranges from amphetamine, MDMA or MDA, and fluorinated amphetamines like 2-FA and 2-FMA, through to caffeine, sugars, and other inert bulking agents. Fentanyl and nitazenes turn up too, through cross-contamination or deliberate adulteration.
The tools on this page are reagent color tests and fentanyl strips, and each has a hard edge. Marquis narrows a sample to the amphetamine family without naming the compound; Simon's separates methamphetamine from amphetamine and answers nothing else; Mecke earns its place only as a cross-reference. Fentanyl strips run a lateral-flow immunoassay that screens one diluted portion for opioids, so a negative describes only what you dipped. None of this makes a sample safe, and no test rules out every risk. Read this page for what the tests rule out, not for permission to dose.

Methamphetamine
A stimulant in the amphetamine family, sold as clear or off-white crystal and as powder. Reagents can place a sample in that family, but only a lab names the exact compound, and nothing on this page measures strength.
Amphetamine
The close relative frequently sold in place of methamphetamine. Marquis reacts the same yellow-orange to both, so Simon's is what tells them apart.
Reagent (spot) test
A drop-on color test that's presumptive: it narrows a sample toward or away from a family and never names a specific compound on its own. Only laboratory analysis confirms which molecule is present.
Marquis
The primary reagent here, giving yellow into orange for substituted amphetamines. It narrows a sample to the family and can't separate methamphetamine from amphetamine or tell you how strong the sample is.
Simon's
A two-part reagent, A then B on the same sample, that flags secondary amines. A strong dark reaction is consistent with methamphetamine; amphetamine gives no change, and so do expired reagent or too little sample.
Mecke
A cross-reference reagent, not an identification. Methamphetamine gives a mild yellow, so a strong or off-color result is a sign something else is abundant.
Presumptive
A result that points toward or away from something without proving it. Every reagent and strip result on this page is presumptive; a laboratory confirms.
Cut / adulterant
Anything mixed into a sample besides the drug it's sold as, from inert bulk to a dangerous active compound. Reagents report whatever is most abundant, so a minor adulterant can hide behind a strong methamphetamine reaction.
MSM (dimethyl sulfone)
A common methamphetamine cut that forms clear crystal resembling the real thing and gives no reagent color. Clarity is not a test, so separating it out takes lab analysis.
Fentanyl test strip
A lateral-flow strip that screens a diluted portion of a sample for fentanyl. It misses nitazenes and some analogs, and a negative describes only the portion you tested.
Which test do I need?

Test for fentanyl first
Methamphetamine is a documented fentanyl-contamination vector, both from cross-contamination in handling and from deliberate adulteration. Most people using stimulants have no opioid tolerance, which makes even a small amount dangerous. Our FentKit includes strips plus the measuring tools you need to dilute correctly.
- Dissolve roughly 10 mg of sample in about half a teaspoon of water.
- Dip the strip and read at five minutes.
- Repeat on separate portions if you have more than a single dose. Contamination is often unevenly distributed.
Do not skip the dilution. Concentrated methamphetamine solutions are documented to cause false positives on fentanyl test strips. Using more sample in less water makes the strip less reliable, not more.
- They don't detect nitazenes. These need separate nitazene strips.
- They don't detect every fentanyl analog. Some analogs and novel opioids read negative.
- A negative describes only the portion you tested. One negative strip does not clear the rest of the bag.
What color should methamphetamine turn?
Marquis is the primary test, and Simon's is what separates methamphetamine from amphetamine. Run both on separate portions of the same sample and read them together, because neither one alone gets you there. - Marquis darkens slowly (15–30 s), often smoking: DXM. It also gives nothing on Simon's.
- Simon's gives no change with an orange Marquis: points to amphetamine rather than meth. But expired reagent, too little sample, and skipping part B look identical, so never read a non-reaction as an answer.
- Marquis fizzes with little to no color: 2-FMA is documented to do exactly this. Fluorinated amphetamines, many cathinones, caffeine and inert cuts all read quiet.
- Any strong, unexpected color on Mecke or Froehde: something other than an amphetamine is abundant.
A yellow-orange-to-brown Marquis reaction is shared by amphetamine, methamphetamine, and a long list of other substituted amphetamines. It's also the expected Marquis result for mescaline, and methylphenidate produces an orange-yellow that sits in the same visual neighborhood. Orange tells you which family you're probably in. It does not tell you which compound, and it does not tell you how strong the sample is.
Sugars and sugar-based binders can also darken with Marquis, which muddies the brown end of the range. If your reaction went straight to brown without passing through orange, treat the result as inconclusive rather than as a positive.

- Place a few milligrams of crushed sample in the test tube. About a match head.
- Add one to two drops of Simon's A.
- Add one to two drops of Simon's B to that same sample. Do not start a fresh sample for B.
- Read within about 60 seconds. A strong dark reaction, blue deepening through purple toward black, is the result you're looking for.
This is the single most common two-part reagent mistake. Our Our Types of Test Kits page tells you to use a separate test tube for each spot kit, meaning Marquis and Simon's each get their own tube and their own portion of sample. It does not mean Simon's A and Simon's B go on separate samples. Split into two portions of A and B and you get no reaction at all, which reads exactly like amphetamine.
- Crush crystal to a fine powder. A chunk only exposes its surface to the reagent, which gives a weak or absent color.
- Sample from more than one crystal. A bag of crystal is not homogeneous. Cuts and contaminants often sit in the fines at the bottom, not in the big pieces you'd naturally pick.
- Use a few milligrams per reagent, roughly a match head. Too much sample can push a reaction straight to black; too little gives nothing.
- Read in bright, neutral daylight against a white background. Orange, brown and red-brown are hard to separate under warm indoor light.
- Reagents report what's most abundant. A strong methamphetamine reaction can completely mask a minor adulterant present at a few percent, which is exactly the concentration at which fentanyl is dangerous.
- Reagents cannot detect fentanyl at realistic adulterant levels. That needs strips.
- Clear crystal proves nothing. MSM (dimethyl sulfone) is a common methamphetamine cut that forms clear crystal and gives no reagent color. Visual "quality" checks are not a test.
- Color is not quantity. Nothing on this page estimates how much methamphetamine is present.
- A non-reaction is not a pass. It's indistinguishable from expired reagent or too small a sample.
Cross-reference with the package

- Marquis reagent
- The primary test. Yellow into orange is consistent with a substituted amphetamine. Purple-black flags MDMA or MDA instead.
- Simon's reagent (two-part)
- Separates methamphetamine from amphetamine. A strong dark blue-purple-black reaction means a secondary amine, so methamphetamine rather than amphetamine. Part A then part B on the same sample.
- Mecke reagent
- A cross-reference, not an identification. Methamphetamine gives a mild yellow, so a strong or off-color reaction means something else is abundant in the sample.
We used to say Mecke "detects" Adderall, 2-FA, 2-FMA and 4-FMA. That was wrong in a way worth spelling out: amphetamine-type compounds give at most a mild yellow with Mecke, and a weak result can't be told apart from expired reagent or too small a sample. Mecke's value here is flagging the unexpected, not naming compounds.

Can you test how strong it is?
Not with a QTest. We don't make a methamphetamine purity kit, and the MDMA, cocaine, LSD, psilocybin and cannabis QTest kits are calibrated for their own substances, so none of them will give you a meaningful methamphetamine number. If you see a "meth purity test" sold anywhere, treat that claim sceptically.
The closest thing available at home is a Skylab separation kit, which separates a mixture into its components so you can test each one and get an approximate sense of how much of each is present. For an actual number, Transparency Testing's mail-in lab analysis is the answer.
Step by step
- Test for fentanyl. Roughly 10 mg in half a teaspoon of water, read at five minutes. Don't concentrate the solution.
- Crush and split. Grind crystal to a fine powder, taking material from more than one piece. Divide into a separate few milligrams for each reagent, in its own tube.
- Run Marquis. One drop. Watch the first five seconds, since speed matters as much as the final color. Yellow into orange is consistent with a substituted amphetamine.
- Run Simon's. One to two drops of A, then one to two drops of B on the same sample. A strong dark reaction narrows it to methamphetamine; no change points to amphetamine.
- Run Mecke as a cross-reference. A mild yellow is expected. Anything strong or off-color means something else is abundant.
- Record it. Photograph your results in daylight next to the booklets, and send unresolved samples to Transparency Testing for a definitive answer.
- Splitting Simon's A and B across two samples. You'll get no reaction and misread methamphetamine as amphetamine.
- Testing an uncrushed crystal. Surface area is everything.
- Reading the final color only. Marquis speed distinguishes MDMA's instant purple-black from DXM's slow grey-black.
- Too much sample, which drives reactions to black, or too little, which gives nothing.
- Dim or colored lighting. Orange, red-brown and brown are the hardest colors on the chart to judge.
- Old reagent. It degrades, so store it cool and dark, and replace it annually.
- Concentrating a fentanyl strip solution to "make sure." It causes false positives.
- Trusting one reagent. Marquis alone cannot separate methamphetamine from amphetamine, and neither can appearance.
Your result wasn't what you expected
- Find out what it actually is. Mail a sample to Transparency Testing, our mail-in lab analysis service, a definitive answer where reagents can only narrow the field.
- If an opioid is plausible, have naloxone in the room. Never use alone. People using stimulants typically have no opioid tolerance, so the margin is small.
- Rule out the test itself. Re-run with fresh reagent, a properly crushed sample, correct two-part Simon's technique, and better lighting before drawing conclusions.
Questions
Can Marquis alone tell me if I have methamphetamine?
No. Marquis gives yellow-orange for both methamphetamine and amphetamine, and for a range of other substituted amphetamines. It narrows it down to a family. Simon's is what separates methamphetamine from amphetamine, and even then you're reading the two results together.
Simon's gave me nothing. Does that mean it's amphetamine?
Only if you're confident the test itself worked. A Simon's non-reaction is produced identically by amphetamine, expired reagent, too little sample, and forgetting part B. Check that your Marquis was a clear yellow-orange, re-run Simon's with fresh reagent and both parts on one sample, and if it still gives nothing, amphetamine is the likelier reading.
My meth is clear crystal. Doesn't that mean it's pure?
No. MSM forms clear crystal and is a common cut. Clarity, size and shape are not a test, and no reagent on this page measures strength.
Does a good set of results mean my sample is safe?
No. Reagents and strips are presumptive, they only describe the portion you tested, and reagents report what's most abundant rather than what's most dangerous. Testing lowers your risk of an unpleasant surprise; it doesn't remove risk.
How much sample do I need?
A few milligrams per reagent, about a match head, in its own test tube. Fentanyl strips need roughly 10 mg in half a teaspoon of water.
